Canada has been recognized as one of the most progressive and inviting countries in the world, a country that protects gay and lesbian rights, and where same-sex couples can legally marry. Built on acceptance, Canada is a country that embraces, encourages, and supports diversity.
Canada has been getting more and more popular with gay and lesbian tourists. Toronto has always been popular. But now places like Halifax, Montreal, Winnipeg and perhaps because THE L WORD was filmed there, Vancouver is also drawing large numbers of lesbians and gays. For the second year in a row, Vancouver has been named the number one gay and lesbian leisure destination in Canada.Tourism Vancouver wants to launch an advertising campaign in Curve, the best-selling lesbian magazine in North America. It also wants city council to help cover the cost of advertising in the magazine, in hopes of strengthening the city's position within the lesbian tourism market. - Why not? Toronto and Halifax did the same thing.
Hundreds of gay and lesbian couples have flocked to B.C. to get married since same-sex marriage was legalized in 2003. Annual Pride Week celebrations also attract thousands of visitors each year.
Tourism Vancouver, said gay and lesbian tourism is a multi-billion dollar industry, largely directed at the U.S. He said now is the time for Vancouver to cash in on that momentum, particularly leading up to the 2010 Olympics."Most queer tourism is geared to men," he said. "But here is this huge market that's been largely ignored. Many lesbians have large disposable incomes, many don't have children and they like to travel a lot."
Canada truly is a diverse country, where you can find amazing offerings of both urban and outdoor activities. Their cities are among the world’s most multicultural, and play host to some of the best gay and lesbian film festivals, sporting events, theatre, special events, and pride celebrations in North America. And their gay villages and communities welcome you with an array of shopping and culinary experiences that will keep you coming back for more.
