It goes without saying that London plays a genial and merry host for a New Year's Eve party, with the River Thames itself serving as a spectacular venue for this special night. What could be better than celebrating the New Year as you pass through this historic City?

Many companies offer river cruises, giving you a prime location to enjoy the fireworks display by the London Eye, whilst enjoying food and drinks along the way.

You’ll have to get down by the Thames early to get a good spot, however the fireworks are an amazing site to behold, and you’ll be able to see them from miles away. With the flashes of golden light reflecting on the water and the cheers of those gathered on the bridges, you can enjoy your part as both revellers in and observers of, this unforgettable evening. The only downside is that thousands of people head to the capital to enjoy the spectacle, so there are very few hotels in London that will have rooms spare if you don’t book well in advance.

 

Head to the North of England and you'll be ready for the fun and games over at Edinburgh's well attended Hogmanay celebrations. With a torchlight procession beginning in the early evening and a street party (not recommended for under 16's) running into New Years Day planned in the City centre, this is a celebration that the whole family can enjoy.

All events here end with fireworks on the turn of Midnight, with younger ages that join the torch procession treated to a firework display to begin the Hogmanay celebrations. Expect large crowds and a friendly party atmosphere, but book ahead (including torches) to avoid disappointment. Tickets range from £15-£35.

For a different type of family friendly New Year's Eve, take a well earned break at one of the CenterParc venues across the UK. Surrounded by themed activities and festive cheer, not only will you find yourself getting into the Christmas spirit but you'll be treated to a number of special events, including the chance to see live reindeer and a Christmas pantomime.

Come New Years Eve and those staying in the Parc will get a chance to see the firework display taking place at midnight. Prices depend on accommodation, number of party members and length of stay.

Fireworks are another key ingredient at the celebrations taking place at Crewe Hall in Cheshire as part of their elegant black tie party night. Located in this Grade I listed building and stately mansion which once played host to Queen Elizabeth II, you'll feel just like royalty.

Greeted with drinks, treated to a six course menu and then let loose on the dance floor, a live band and DJ will take you into the New Year countdown. Prices begin at £125 and include a firework display and mulled wine at midnight. Guests must be 18 or over. Make sure you book your taxi home, or make arrangements for an overnight stay.

European celebrations also go with a bang over in Prague, with the city hosting a number of large firework displays as the evening draws to a close. This is a great option if you're looking for something a bit different with a holiday thrown in for good measure.

Once you arrive at the City Centre, head towards Prague Castle for one of the best spots for viewing the display. An historical and romantic setting overlooking the river, you can join the locals and watch as the sights and sounds of the fireworks fill the evening air.
