After I decide where I want to go on a trip, the first thing I do is start researching the gay community there. Where are the clubs, the gay shops, the gay restaurants - I want to see other gays! I look for the rainbow flag and I know I am welcome there. Maybe because I was born and raised in a small town, now I enjoy getting out and exploring gay area around the world. And I would never spend my money, knowingly, in non gay friendly places.

I agree with you Derrick. When I travel, I look for the rainbow flags - and support those businesses. And yes, I like to do "straight" touristy stuff like visit museums and castles, but I also check out the area's gay nightlife. I drink in gay bars, look for the gay enetertainment and look to meet new gay people in my travels.

Santorini is great for riding donkeys and ATVs around the island, ya know, while waiting for a gay club to open up!
It's an amazingly bold political statement to put EuroPride in Warsaw instead of a more obviously gay city- Yea Europe!!
Happens all the time except not usually that badly. Many of the travel companies and 'booking agencies' advertise themselves as 'gay friendly' or similar when in fact they are just after your money. SOme of the large travel companies are now training staff to be gay friendly but regrettably their motives are far from altruistic, they are just interested in your money!!

My advice to gay or lesbian travellers is to go independent and book their own flights and hotels direct. There is a wealth of small boutique and bijou gay and lesbian places to choose from and you will always find a welcome in such places.
In general if you do book with through the large companies you are at least guarenteed a bit of anonymity when you arrive at your hotel, especially when there are 2000 other guests staying there!!

Although the article states that hotels like the "W" are unquestionably gay friendly, I felt differently about the "W" in Barcelona, where the desk clerk sneered when he asked "Are you sure you want one King-size bed and not two Queens?" and we definitely felt looked down upon during our entire stay.
